The PAN card also works as a valid identity proof, age proof, and financial identity. It also helps in completing KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements for banks and financial institutions.
A PAN Card contains a 10-character alphanumeric number (for example: ABCDE1234F). Each character has a specific meaning
First Five Characters (Letters) — The first three are random letters from A to Z. The fourth letter represents the category of taxpayer (see table on left). The fifth letter is the first letter of the cardholder's surname.
Next Four Characters (Numbers) — These are sequential numbers ranging from 0001 to 9999, uniquely assigned to the cardholder.
Last Character (Letter) — This is an alphabetic check digit used for verification purposes.
Example: ABCDE1234F
ABC - Random letters
D - Category (Individual)
E - First letter of surname
1234 - Unique numbers
F - Verification character
The PAN Card shows the full name of the person or the name of the company or organization that owns the card.
For people who hold an individual Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card, the father's name is also printed on the card along with the holder's details.
For individuals, the card displays the date of birth. For companies or firms, the date of registration of the business is shown.
Every PAN Card has a unique 10-character alphanumeric number. This number contains important information about the cardholder.
The PAN Card also includes the signature of the individual, which can be used as a valid signature proof for financial transactions.
For individuals, the PAN Card includes a photograph, which makes it a valid photo identity proof. However, PAN Cards issued to companies, firms, or organizations do not contain a photograph.
Note: This number remains permanent for lifetime and does not change even if your address or city changes.
